We want to feature your work in the June 2014 issue of Australian Wood Review!


BOXMAKER is an exciting new competiton and this is your personal invitation to enter. The best judged entries will win prizes and be featured in the magazine.
You may enter one or two entries.

What is a box?

  • Boxes are containers for things we value. Your box may be a container for basic everyday items, for valuable documents, or for precious or special things.
  • The outside may give a clue to its contents, or it may disguise or contrast with them.
  • Your box may be totally traditional, or wildly imaginative. It can be all about function, or it can exist for symbolic or ceremonial reasons.
  • A decorative or storage box may enclose its contents by a variety of means, but your box must have a lid or means of being opened and closed. A lid can be hinged, raised, pulled, slid and/or be fastened by a catch, clasp or lock.



What shape can my box be?

Boxes can can be round, square, rectangular or irregularly shaped.


How big can it be?

Boxes can be small and large. Boxes may be floor-standing, or rest on other surfaces or stands. They can be mounted to a wall. Your box can be any size and any shape.


What can it be made from?

Your box must be made primarily of wood. Other materials may be incorporated, however wood must be the main material.


What techniques can I use?

Boxes may be joined, turned, carved, bent, laminated or scroll sawn. Any technique or combination of techniques may be used.


How can it be decorated?

Your box may be decorated with carving, pyrography, veneering, colouring, marquetry techniques, or have other materials applied or inset


Date of making?

Your box must have been made within 12 months of the entry deadline.


How do I enter?

You can email your entry or post a CD or USB stick with the following: Five images of your box including full view closed, full view open, inside detail, outside detail and a photo of you, the maker, with your box.


Images should be 2–4mb jpegs saved at the highest quality. Do not crop or edit your images. Make sure you keep copies of your images. Because entry is by photographic submission good photos are essential.


Include your name, address, phone no, email, and up to 200 words about your box, including dimensions, date of making, materials, methods used and special features or ideas behind its making.
