The Furnishing Industry Association of Australia has announced its 2016 FIAA Apprentice of the Year and commented: ‘Douglas Keith demonstrated exceptional skills and knowledge of his trade and his commitment for woodwork is clearly evident throughout his project.’

Douglas, 21 is originally from Parkes, NSW and is currently undertaking the third year of his four year apprenticeship with Myles Gostelow, a well known furniture designer/maker located in the historic village of Tharwa, ACT.

‘Doug contacted me when he had finished year 12, seeking to pursue his passion in making fine timber furniture’, said Myles. ‘He has very good hand skills, attention to detail and a great work ethic. He is honest, reliable and is able to work well under pressure and instruction. We entered Doug in the FIAA apprentice of the year award because the FIAA competition looks to recognise and reward the top trained cabinetmaking apprentice that demonstrates a clear all round knowledge and skill for the trade.

Doug was the winner of the ACT and NSW division was awarded a $500 cash prize. FIAA Special Commendations were also awarded to Jacob Tesch from Brendan Parker Joinery and Thomas Bingley from Select Custom Joinery for their outstanding projects. Doug, Brendan and Thomas are now also nominated for the John Tiddy Award and receive all-expenses paid overnight trips to the AWISA 2016 exhibition in Melbourne in addition to $2000 towards their training course fees*.

For the FIAA awards, apprentices are required to provide examples of recent work. Doug provided a detailed analysis of his first year project which was a bedside cabinet with curved door and drawer front which was made from Tasmanian blackwood and celery top pine. Handcut dovetails and mortise and tenons featured throughout the piece.

The last word goes to Doug’s employer Myles Gostelow: ‘Doug is a very talented student and a deserving winner of this competition.’
