VIDEO: Making the Column Lamp

Comments Comments

Here’s a ‘tall’ tale by Adelaide maker Sam Weckert of how many parts came together. Hundreds of offcut segments were cut and glued into cylinder forms that were then glued together. After mounting the cylinder to his long bed Wadkin lathe, Sam Weckert turned his massive floor standing Column lamp. Sam also created the ceramic lampshade.

The lamp was made for Clockwork, curated by Soda Objects and Maz Mis Styling and shown last August at Adelaide Design Week 2025 and also entered into Maker of the Year, presented by Carbatec.

‘The column lamp was born out of the need for a corner presence feature light’ explains Sam. The base comprises of 45 individual hollow octagon segments, all off which were offcut timbers from under the docking saw. African mahogany, American white oak, American white ash, American black walnut, Tasmanian blackwood feature. Careful attention was made in the gluing up process to ensure timber densities were placed in the correct fashion to maintain weight balance in the high speed turning process. The handmade shade is spun out of 6kg of White Stoneware clay, bisque fired only, to contrast the polished base its set upon.’
