Rhys Jones, Wannan Desk & Chair (WORLD 2021)

Country
Australia

Materials: American Cherry, Rock Maple, stainless steel, nylon, fibreglass, Danish paper cord Description: The Wannan Desk and Chair were designed and crafted for a light and open study space that overlooks Palm Beach, Sydney. The intention was to create a dynamic and transparent suite of furniture that would support the user in their work, and in repose, while surveying the sweeping ocean views. A sense of transparency is created by revealing the structure of the desk and chair, and using curves to trace the forces that run through each piece. The profiles and details are designed to reflect light in a way that accentuates these characteristics. The curved framework and cantilevered drawers create an open and lively space beneath the working surface of the desk. Fibreglass is used to reinforce the stretchers which support the drawer carcasses. The chair employs a range of laminate bending techniques and unique methods of weaving paper cord, allowing the traditional Danish weave pattern to span the two sweeping rails which form the backrest. Together, the desk and chair support the rituals of work and contemplation, while reflecting the qualities of the space that evoke a connection to the coastal environment beyond.
