Jacob Parker, Wall-Mounted Pendulum Clock (Student Awards 2018)

My inspiration behind the Pendulum Clock (my year 12 major work) was to create a family heirloom dedicated to my late grandfather which could be passed down through the future generations. I chose to go for a modern approach for the design of the clock as our house is quite modern. The design includes two contrasting timbers for aesthetic purposes (Huon pine and Surian cedar), a hinged glass front door, a hidden ‘push-to-open’ drawer and a lathe-cut mechanism access point. Included in the design were many different types of joinery with the two most visible joints being the laminated finger joints on the top carcase and the dovetails in the hidden drawer. Both joints were hand done with saws and chisels. I also used various techniques and jigs to achieve parts of the clock such as the clock disc numbers and timber plaque (with grandfather’s name engraved) which were cut out/etched with a laser cutter. The curved parts of the front frame and dial backboard were achieved by creating a pivoting router jig that allowed a router to cut perfect arcs. The clock is 750mm high, 440mm wide and 190mm deep. The clock was finished on Aug 14th, 2018. Year 12, Kelso High Campus, Denison College of Secondary Education, NSW Teacher: Adam Batchelor
