Peter Cowper, The Curl Light (Art & Accessories)

The Curl light was created by Peter Cowper of Bespoke by Design together with his wife, Interior Designer Janet Cowper of Q Design Services Ltd. The concept behind the design was to develop a unique timber light piece that was both functional and sculptural which would look comfortable in many homes and interior styles. Using specialised LED lighting and traditional craftmanship, Peter set out to enhance the natural features and beauty of natural timber and produce a calming atmospheric accent light. Vacuum pressed laminations of Tasmanian blackwood veneer over MDF substrate, create the vertical vanes and base which are bought together via an epoxied mortise and tenon joint. The LED strip and diffuser are rebated into the centre of one of the vanes. The Curl standard lamp is 1700mm high with 120mm wide vanes; sitting on a base measuring 230mm x 560mm. The organic shape and warm glow of the lighting creates a wonderful shadow effect when placed against a wall, in the corner of a room or when reflected in glass, mirror or gloss finishes. When viewed from different perspectives the Curl has subtle movement and changes shape with unexpected light play appearing at different angles. The Curl light is designed to be either a standalone accent light or can be positioned with other accessories as a centre piece. Any unusual wood tones or figure of the timber are brought out by the diffused light to show the distinct natural variations that only real wood can provide. Photography by Daniel Allen
