Isaac Loaring, Sunrise over Hokkaido (Console Table) (Student)

Reflecting my many travels to Japan I have created this hallway table by drawing inspiration from my visits to traditional Japanese temples and castles and exposure to Japanese cultural traditional block prints and screen paintings. Through the use of extensive hand machining performing complex joints, cuts and the use of intricate design and paint work I have created a hallway table that will draw attention inside any home or space. The entire design process was extensive developing my final piece through repeated hand drawn orthographic, 3D isometric and 3D exploded working drawings, this process was entirely performed by hand using no CAD or programing software during this phase. The table includes multiple complex joinery techniques such as dowel inlays, dowel joints, mitre joints, Jarrah inlays and multiple cut angles to achieve the angular leg appearance. These joints were all hand machined using no programed equipment such as CNC routers or Plasma cutters, this forced me to rely on highly accurate marking and cutting during manufacturing. Through my studies of Japanese art and culture I’ve come to understand the importance of the value of both the artistic design aspects and the traditional crafted aspects in Japanese furniture design. The feature painted panel on the hallway table is reminiscent of the traditional painting and print making style of the Edo period which pays homage to the forces of nature and the painted paper screens and folding panels seen throughout the households of the Japanese Shogunates. This is why the painting of the cranes is a significant part of my hallway table. The table acts as a both a frame for the artwork and with the addition of a strong glass table top serves as a timeless statement furniture piece.
