Miles Davey, Steambent Bench (Student Awards 2019)

Over the course of the HSC Industrial Technology year I constructed a steambent bench out of American white oak. I used the process of steambending and laminating timber to create the curvature of the bench. Eight slightly varied shaped formers where used to bend the timber around creating the initial shape, form and structure of the bench. Individual strips of timber “stringers” were then curved across the formers to create structure, stability and most importantly the visual effect of the curvature within the bench. This project was incredibly challenging as it required a lot of testing and experimentation with different combinations and methods of laminating and steaming. A lot of testing also went into the process of determining the most suitable method to attached each stringer to the formers. I feel as though this experience has allowed me to challenge and extend myself to develop and acquire new skills and techniques. Year 12, The Kings School. Teacher: Portia Beattie
