Greg Hehir, Robust Fragility (Art & Accessories)

Made from two unique timbers gidgee nelia and Huon pine. These materials are brought together in a form which embodies the toughness and resilience of these iconic trees but also alludes to the threats which impact their future. The properties present in these timbers are well known, gidgee is one of the hardest timbers known to man, growing in a hostile environment both hot and dry. Huon pine is a far softer timber, renowned for its qualities and uses which grows in a cold and wet environment. Both exist and thrive in places which have extremes climatic demands however are under threat from land clearing and overgrazing in the case of gidgee and from historic harvesting practices, bushfires and the creation of hydroelectricity infrastructures in the case of Huon pine. The form implies continuity and repetition but is poised to topple over.
