Charlie Norrish, Occasional Chair (Student Awards 2018)

Upon designing my occasional chair, I drew inspiration from Danish Chairs, and my immediate focus became creating an inviting and comfortable piece that will stand out in a living environment, as well as among other fine furniture pieces. Testing and research through seating ergonomics, Computer-Aided Design, 3D printing and a full scale mock-up allowed me to extensively assess the curves and angles of the components in how they would affect the comfort, aesthetics and stability of my chair. The implementation of the 'tear-drop' feature of joinery boasts the Tasmanian blackwood's beauty the most vividly; which is complemented with a rich oil and contrasted with the eye-catching mustard-yellow upholstery. Skills and techniques such as timber bending, routing and sanding were pivotal in solidifying a smooth and sleek design that met my goals. Year 12, Freshwater Senior Campus. Teacher: Ben Percy
