Rogan Hickey, New Guinea Rosewood Desk (Student Awards 2019)

A New Guinea Rosewood Desk, with three sets of dovetailed drawers, timber runners and timber laminated drawer handles. The desk I had planned to manufacture had to be a perfect fit to a section in my living room. My living room also incorporated other timber furniture pieces throughout which made it a challenge trying to find the right timber to balance out the room. As for the design I wanted to make a desk with a mid-century styled vibe to match the current décor of the room. The original design of the desk took multiple trial and errors to find the right amount of sophistication and a project which I will be able to complete in the given time frame. The timber which I used throughout my project was New Guinea rosewood, it matched the look of my living room and the finish of the grain and colour is exceptional. The carcase of the body and rails is a mixture of domino and biscuit joints, while the drawers are through dovetails on all sides with a NGR false front. The handles of the drawers have been laminated from six 1mm thick rock maple strips, the handles were made using a laser cut template then affixed to the drawers with decorative brass screws. This project challenged my abilities and made me think proactively to complete my major work. Although I had numerous setbacks and mistakes, pushing through I was able to reap the benefits of my labour by producing an original desk. Year 12, St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill.
