Nathaniel Malek, Nathaniel's Tunnel Hull Race Boat (STUDENT 2021)

Growing up in a boating family is where my inspiration began, this formed and sparked the idea of building a race boat for my last year of school. For my 2021 HSC Industrial Timber Major, I designed a Tunnel Hull Race Boat that incorporates aerodynamic and hydrodynamic concepts enhancing its capabilities. I constructed the boat using 4 and 6mm Marine Plywood and Pine sheets for the external panels of the boat such as decking and walls. Radiata Pine and Marine Plywood for all the internal structures such as stringer, batten and bulkheads. I also added Mahogany to the nose of the boat for added aesthetic appeal. I used West System epoxy resin for the glueing and coating of the boat. I choose certain materials for the project as they fit within my budget and were recommended and rated as most suitable for racing. For display I made a trolley to have the boat situated at a 20-degree angle, a motor was added and racing stickers to allow the markers and audience to view a real-life vessel. I used a buffing machine to add the final polished touch and to add that extra shine. Year 12, Epping Boys High School. Teacher: Nicholas Bell
