Matthew Sykes, Jewelry Box and Stand (Student Awards 2018)

My jewelry box and stand was constructed from November 2017 to August 2018 and is made from American cherry with Victorian ash veneered plywood, Mackay cedar and mahogany. The design was inspired by boxes on the internet and the secret compartment was inspired by Dustin Penner’s designs on YouTube. The dimensions are 315 x 185 x 260mm. It includes two drawers constructed using hand cut dovetails and housing joints. Grooves and rebates were cut using grooving and rebate planes. The secret compartment uses small hand cut dovetail joints and a locking latch using a piece of metal. It is opened using an allen key to push the latch down out of a notch cut into the box's false bottom, springs epoxied into the inside of the box push the compartment out its slot. The top inlay was cut using a CNC laser cutter. The stand was designed to complement the box. It sits at 900mm high, the stands legs are taped which was made freehand on a bandsaw. Spray lacquer was used to finish the project. Drawer knobs, a latch and 90° hinges were fitted, and velvet cushions were made for the drawers and top tray. Year 12, Pennant Hills High School, NSW.
