Tim Quirk, Jaggar Console Table (Student)

Before leaving the Maleny Wood Expo last year I decided to drop into the final stand being the second hand book shop. Here I found AWR edition #14 that I was after for years. This featured David Boucher's Ebenistes on the cover. The magnificent works of art that were featured in this article were my inspiration for the Jaggar Console Table. The pattern on the top, aprons and drawer front were influenced by those on the Hannah Cabinet by master craftsman Geoff Hannah. walnut burr, Maccasar ebony and American walnut veneers with solid ebony, American walnut and American rock maple timbers were used. The table top features a walnut burr four-way bookmatch with Maccasar ebony cross banding and water fall edge. Ebony stringings and corner inlays were routed in after the veneers were pressed and each fitted by hand. The aprons and drawer front feature the same pattern although the walnut burr on these was bookmatched. The substrate used was blockboard due to its light weight it was a good option to achieve a thick enough top to make the waterfall edge effective. The drawer features hand cut dovetails, ebony drawer pull and a herringbone Maccasar ebony parquetry drawer bottom. The legs were selected from a 75mm thick board of American walnut so they could be rift sawn. The grain was filled and the piece French polished to full choke and high shine. The reason it was named the Jaggar Console Table was due to the pattern produced in the four-way book match. Dimensions 1125mm L, 900mm H, 312mm D.
