Guy Binns, Hoop Chair (Student Awards 2019)

Throughout the course of year 12 and my enrolment in the Industrial Technology Timber Products & Furniture course I was challenged to find inspiration and creativity that satisfied my desire to be able to create a high quality product with a design that provided me with access to gain a variety of new, high level skills to be incorporated. In order to achieve this desired design I decided to manipulate and embody very natural elements of the timber materials I used through individual components and their relation with the rest of the chair. The importance of curved components in encapturing these natural aesthetics was crucial and eventuated to be one of the salient features of my product. In achieving these features, the use of complex skills and techniques such as laminating to create the curved components demonstrates the new techniques and skills that I have learned and included into my major work. The use and availability of high level, extremely accurate technologies such as CAD programs, laser cutting technology and 3D printing provided me with access to extremely accurate templates and prototypes. In the process of designing and creating my project it was important for detailed research to be applied in order to ensure that the project is functional, proportional and meets my requirements and desires set with my initiation to the project. The importance of time management in my project was one of the most daunting prospects of the major work. Although my time management was not perfectly consistent I was able to complete my project by the deadline and have a product that met my expectations and incorporated a variety of skills that allowed me to access a high mark.
