Owain Pierce, Desk (Student Awards 2018)

Over the past 10 months I have designed and constructed a desk made from Australian wormy chestnut, red cedar, Tasmanian oak, tulipwood and Tasmanian oak veneered plywood. My aim was to create a highly functional piece of furniture that was both eye-catching and comfortable allowing it to be used with ease and for long periods of time. The curves that are incorporated throughout the whole design; from the laminated legs, to the inlay design on the door and drawer fronts through to the curved dovetail shelf. Make this a unique and aesthetically pleasing piece of furniture. There are four push to open drawers designed to hold electronic and stationary equipment as well as a cabinet with a push to open door for books and paper. The cabinet and drawers provide convenient and accessible storage which reduce clutter on the top of the desk adding to the overall functionality of the design. Additionally, there is an shelf on the top of the desk that provides space for computer monitors and lamp shades to be placed without taking away from the working space. A range of difficult timber joinery techniques have been applied in the construction of this desk including four variations of the dovetail joint, locked mitres, widening joints, dowels and dominos. The use of Scandinavian oil was chosen to ensure the natural colour, texture and grain patterns of the timber are highlighted and protected. Creative design concepts and careful construction have resulted in this high-quality piece of bespoke furniture. Year 12, St Patrick's College Strathfield, NSW. Teacher: Lorenzo Fontana
