Myles Gostelow, Cascading Synergy Dining Table (Furniture)

Huon pine and Tasmanian blackwood dining table pair. The client's request for this piece was that the natural waney edge of the Huon slab be maintained. This was achieved by halving the Huon slab and flipping it in on itself giving a straight edge to the table. The blackwood centre infill was then shaped to match these waney edges which were both blackened using a blow torch. Due to the size of the slab and space where the piece would be located in the client's house and for functionality purposes, it was also a requirement that the piece could function as one large table and two smaller tables. In total the piece can seat 10 people, or function as a six- and a four-seater. When the two tables are butted together the grain and the endgrain of the legs match nicely to form a waterfall like detail. With the possibility of international transport it was also designed to pack flat with the legs being detached using loose tenons and a mechanical fixing from the underside frame. All timber movement and locating was accounted for using fixed point and slotted screws from the underside. The cascading blackwood legs were hand shaped using various techniques. The piece was finished with Osmo oil. Dimensions 1100mm x 3.6 metres.
