Brian Dawson, Butterfly Box (Bowls & Boxes)

This box measuring 300 x 300 x 450mm is made primarily of Huon pine with a Tasmanian oak frame. Each panel depicts a Scottish scene with mountains, waves and beaches in relief. The superimposed butterfly is a red admiral, a common species in Scotland and the markings on the wings imitate the actual pattern and colour of the real thing. Lifting the lid reveals two drop-in boxes of Huon pine with relief carvings which complement the scenes on the outer skin and add depth to each different scene. The lifting handles are of camphor laurel.
