Benjamin Rosenzweig, Butterfly 3D Laminated Chopping Board (Student Awards 2017)

Radiata pine, Fijian mahogany and jarrah 470 x 490 x 34mm While studying for Creative Woodwork and searching online, I came across MTM Wood's design for laminated chopping boards. I loved the design, it looked amazing so I had to make it. To make this effect I cut out the pine and Fijian mahogany at different widths, ranging from 3mm to 26mm. I arranged them in order to make a pattern, i.e 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 18, 20, 24, 26, 24, 20, 18, 14, 12… etc. By cutting, gluing, recutting, regluing, recutting and rearranging I produced this design. I used two-part gloss and then a final coat of wax rubbed in to finish it off. I chose to make the sides out of a jarrah and to put the end grain upwards because it is a dark red wood which would make the pattern stand out very well.
