This reclaimed Blackwood cabinet was inspired by a selection of images bought in by the clients, of designs they liked that just didn’t fully hit the mark. We discussed at length what was important to them - like a hidden draw, leg style, the carved door and sizing to allow for DVD storage - before putting tools to wood and getting the build underway. After seeing a few timber samples around the workshop, the clients decided on Blackwood, sourced from a sustainable supplier in Yackandandah, Victoria. A perfect material choice with its stunning colours, perfectly suited to the design and complimented with brass dowel inserts. The front edges of the cabinet feature a slight bevel that is reflected with the use of a mitre joint with brass dowels on the right-hand side of the cabinet. At the left-hand end, the draws continue the angled theme by featuring an exposed side return with mitre joint, again with brass inserts. A hidden draw is tucked away within the top draw. The carved door was firstly routed to remove the bulk of the waste, then power sanded to finesse the shape. Hand sanding finished the shaping and finish process. Quality metal tracks were sourced for the sliding door to ensure smooth operation without sacrificing aesthetics. The piece is finished with Rubio Monocoat Pure for a natural look and feel.
