Jai Hurrell, 6'4" Long Board Hybrid Surfboard (Student Awards 2019)

For months I had been fascinated and deeply satisfied with the building of wooden surfboards and canoes. With a passion for surfing the goal for this piece was to create a long board using easily available timbers. These timbers included radiata pine, Australian blackwood, French oak and plywood. The hollow core surfboard was created by using CNC to cut out the interior frame/skeleton and, the top and bottom were wrapped in a thin timber sheets. The rails were developed by adding thin interlocking timber strips around the curved surface. The whole board was then wrapped in fibreglass and resin to create a water tight seal. Fin boxes and a leash plug were then added. Overall this was the most time consuming and complex build I have ever attempted and I am very happy with how it has turned out.
