This coming weekend: Melbourne Guild hand tool event
This coming weekend, October 26 and 27, the Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking's popular annual Hand Tool Event & Open Day Weekend takes place.
This is a value packed free event with a rolling program of 12 demonstrations which take place between 10am and 4pm on both the Saturday and Sunday. See the schedule here.
Here are the demonstrations you can expect to see:
1. Steam bending trays and bentwood boxes - Matt Stonehouse and Alastair Boell
2. Hand cut dovetails – Alastair Boell
3. Perch stool making – Jon Grant
4. Carving – Ronnie Sexton
5. Roorkee chair making – Hugh Anderson
6. Sharpening and hand plane tuning techniques – Alastair Boell
7. Windsor chair making – Jon Grant
8. Musical instrument making presentation – Joanne Saunders
9. Spoon carving – Bryan Poynton (TBC)
10. Japanese joinery - Shinobu Kobayashi
11. Windsor and Shaker Inspired footstool making – Lee Gratton
12. Kumiko – Pascale Turvey and Peter Fox (students at the MGFW)
A select group of fine tool experts and retailers will also offer advice and tools for sale. These include Vesper Tools, Lie-Nielsen Toolworks, Japanese Tools Australia, BJS Planes, Tetsu (Japanese Hand Tools, Furniture, Antiques) and the Hand Tool Preservation Association of Australia.
On top of this you can enjoy an exhibition of work by students of the Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking, see a demonstration of milling logs and participate in the "So You Think You Can Dovetail" competition. A sausage sizzle and raffle make this a complete day out.
