‘When and why is a chair a chair?’, asks Dale Hardiman in his catalogue essay to The Chair, an exhibition curated by Eliza Tiernan and recently shown at Craft Victoria in Melbourne.
‘Is it the functionality of a chair, or is it our historical understanding that classifies a ‘thing’ as being a chair?’, Hardiman continues. The result was a collection of chairs that question our notions of what a chair is, and yet reinforces the idea that, in Hardiman’s words: ‘The chair is fluid; no longer simply a physical thing.’
