With a new name, a new format, new venue and a new outlook the first of the Timber, Tools & Artisan Shows launched on Friday March 22, 2019, and the energy was high.
New look
Marquee 1 at the RNA Showgrounds in Brisbane is big enough to house a jumbo jet and from March 22 to 24 it was decked out in wood, machinery, hand and power tools. Seen by this visitor were demonstrations of scrollsawing, turning and sharpening. Additional displays highlighted techniques and materials for metalwork, painting, ceramics, jewellery and sculptural works. Outside the marquee demonstrations of mobile milling and blacksmithing drew interest.
Candy Tocknell-Gray and Brendan Gray, organisers of Timber, Tools & Artisans Shows were pleased with the turnout and forecast the Sydney show in June will be even bigger.
The new format also has a community focus. Known to many as one of the owners of All Class Timbers, Paul Riley tragically died in an accident last year. The Paul Riley Woodworking Scholarship has been created in his memory and is available for those attaining Certificate III in Carpentry, Joinery and Cabinetmaking. The scholarships are supported by Federation University Australia and TAFE Australia.
Community groups present included the Bayside Woodturners, Black dog Institute, Ipswich Woodcrafts Club, Deaf Lottery Australia and International Wood Collectors Society.
