External Review: explorative design exhibition

External Review is an explorative exhibition by Australian designer Tom Fereday which follows and celebrates the entire design process from materials to product. Presented by the Australian Design Centre in collaboration with Evostyle, Swiss Design and the American Hardwood Export Council, as part of Sydney Design Week.

Australian design is celebrated but the design process is often hidden. We see a final piece with little knowledge of the enthusiasm, effort and expertise of all those who contributed to its creation.

External Review lays bare all elements of process from conception to material choice to manufacturing to final presentation. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about and challenge preconceptions of the process and material selection. How can we foster a sense of thoughtful, intentional and environmentally responsible design whilst championing Australian craftsmanship?

Born in Australia, Tom Fereday grew up in London studying sculpture and graphic design at the Wimbledon School of Art before moving to Australia to complete an honours in Industrial Design at the University of Technology, Sydney. Working across Europe and Australia Tom Fereday went on to found his sole practice in 2012. Works have been presented and published internationally through collaborations with brands including Louis Vuitton, Alessi, Stellarworks and Herman Miller and exhibited through galleries including Museum of Contemporary Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Powerhouse Museum, Mint Gallery, Australian Design Centre and frequent international furniture fairs.

For Sydney Design Week 2022, External Review traces the creation of Fereday’s newest design in American red oak in collaboration with Evostyle, Swiss Design, Australian Design Centre and the American Hardwood Export Council.
