After an intense year of learning, Sturt School for Wood’s 12 full-time students are ready to show the fruits of their training to the world. Cambium is the title of their graduate exhibition which opens November 19 at Sturt Gallery in Mittagong, NSW.

Cambium is the layer of fibrous tissue found just below the bark of a tree where new growth occurs. It was chosen by the students as the name for the exhibition as they felt it represented their individual and collective journeys of growth.

The  exhibition will be opened by Jon Goulder, past head of Adelaide’s Jam Factory Furniture Studio and now Senior Designer for Snøhetta Architects Australasia. The exhibition runs until December 4.

During the year students have been tutored and mentored by Peter Young, David Upfill-Brown, Linda Fredheim, Darren Oates, Stuart Faulkner, David Muston, Neil and Pam Erasmus and many other designer makers who have given appraisals and talks at the school. Of particular note were visits from New Zealand designer maker David Haig, and renowned architects Glenn Murcutt AO and Richard Leplastrier AO.

In 2023, Peter Young, David Upfill-Brown, Darren Oates and Linda Fredheim will return as tutors for the Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Manufacturing, and be joined by Aled Lewis from Wales who will lead the "chair project".

The 12 graduating students are: William Armstrong Guy, Conor Coleman, Millicent Dorn, Bethany Fowler, Gregoire Gamand, Michael Harris, Lars Hennicke, Clare O’Reilly, Finnan Solomon-Walker, Celeste Stein, Georgia Szymanski and Ross Wortham.
