In Gryfino, Poland a forest of around 400 pine trees grow with 90° bends close to their base. Not due to some vagary of weather or species, these trunk deformations are believed to have been induced by humans. One theory is some kind of pruning was carried out with a motive in mind, perhaps like the ‘grow your own furniture’ we reported on a while back.

The trees are reported to have been planted in 1930, and the advent of World War II apparently curtailed any further shaping that may have been intended.

This video shows more images of the so-called ‘Crooked Forest’.
