In 2018, along with its ongoing furniture making courses, Heartwood Creative Woodworking will add new places to its 8x8 Intro to Woodworking course. The school is located in Marrickville, Sydney.

The Intro Course has been designed for novices or those with very little fine woodworking experience. During three hour weekly sessions over eight weeks participants work through two skill building projects covering a broad range of woodworking skills and techniques.

The initial project largely focuses on fundamental hand skills, getting a feel for hand tools, using the bench and bench aids, and hand shaping using a variety of hand tools including hand planes, block planes, spokeshaves, rasps and more. The second project will focus on marking out, machinery skills and achieving accuracy. At the end of the eight week course students will take home two completed items. The 8x8 Follow On Course and 8x8 Small Table Project complete the series.

As well as Make Your Own Woodworking Bench with MyBench designer Stuart Faulkner, Heartwood Creative will also offer other specialist short courses in the early part of the year. These include spoon carving with Fiona Glover and double bevel marquetry with Peter Young.
