Patrick Holcombe, Wedgetail Coffee Table (Furniture)

Seeing a slab of timber this thick reminds me of something geological. There is a feeling I get when mountaineering where I remember that the rock I am on is more than just its surface. It’s just rock all the way down to the core of the mountain and beyond. A lot of furniture tries to create space. Fine timber sticks surrounding some air. This piece does the opposite. It displays its weight and volume boldly. It makes me want to reach inside it to see if it’s timber all the way down. My father built the house I grew up in from recycled oregon so the smell reminds me of him and his workshop. I like the joinery in my pieces to tell the story of their construction. I want the viewer to see how the strength is created and trust it immediately. The weight of this piece holds itself together without glue. It is called The Wedgetail after the Wedgetail Eagle as "dovetail" really didn't do it justice.
