Bailey Pattison, TV Unit (Student)

This TV unit was built for my HSC major project at Armidale Secondary College. The unit is designed to accommodate a TV on the upper section and a record player on the lower section on the left. Aside from the veneer back, the project is built entirely out of Australian timber; the bulk of the project is blackbutt, the strip on the top is Tasmanian blackwood, the drawers are spotted gum, and the top of the lower section on the left is made out of recycled tallowwood. The inlays are all Tasmanian blackwood. I used this project to show off the natural features and defects in the timbers. The slats are connected to the frame using lap joints and dowels. The joints where the legs meet the top rails are mitered through mortise and tenon joints and these joints are also used where the legs meet the bottom rails with a hidden "inline tenon" on the legs. All joints were made to be exposed wherever possible to show off the joinery of the project. There are two push-to-open drawers with traditional dovetail joinery. The top of the project is connected to the frame using lap joints and there is a 5mm black SikaFlex border to allow for expansion and contraction of the top. The shelf is connected with housing joints and there is also a housing joint where the recycled tallowwood on the lower section meets the blackbutt wall. The project was finished with Osmo PolyX Oil to bring out the grain and maintain the natural colour of the timbers. Teacher: Bernard O'Baoill
