Charlotte Asbridge, Tambour Entertainment Unit (Student)

For my 2020 HSC major project, I have designed and crafted this tambour entertainment unit. My project which is constructed from Tasmanian blackwood and sassafras was largely inspired by Will and Holly Acland's 'Cunard Cabinet.' This influenced me to add a sliding tambour door to my entertainment unit and to give it an art deco appearance. My entertainment unit consists of 1 fixed sliding dovetail shelf, 2 veneered floating shelves and 2 soft close drawers. The unit consists of many joinery techniques including; domino joinery, sliding dovetail joinery, bridle and finger joinery. The legs of the major project were turned on a wood lathe with the bridle joint matching the curvature of the legs. The sliding tambour door was constructed with over 70 timber slats across the two doors with the drawer fronts also matching the tambour aesthetic. These were all routed to shape on the router table. A router jig was also created on CAD and laser cut out of MDF so I could create an accurate and consistent groove for my tambours to run in.
