Liam Martin, Record Cabinet (Student Awards 2018)

I created a record cabinet inspired by the idea of a vintage piece of furniture that my Pa made who was a cabinet maker by trade. My dad collects records so l decided to make him a cabinet with a vintage streamlined look. To give the cabinet a unique look l designing the sides with a 15 degree angle. I selected my timber and cut and glued it to the required measurements, then l assembled the carcass of the piece using dominos and clamps. Next the base was assembled, then the door. Included in the door is a feature panel and a routed out handle. The door runs between two thin pieces of timber between the top and the bottom. To finish the piece l used tung oil to enhance the natural colours of the timber. I am extremely proud of the finished product and my Dad was grateful to be able to display his record player and records in our family’s lounge room. I am looking forward to my Pa seeing the piece over Christmas holidays. I am keen to design and build more furniture in the future as l found the whole process very rewarding.
