Adam Webb, Odessy Captains Chair (Furniture)

My contemporary take on the classic captains/smokers/bow chair was originally designed while studying at the Centre for Fine Woodworking. It has undergone some tweaking and refinement since, this latest version made from Tasmanian blackwood. Designed to be a chair to sit in all day, every day, it incorporates Maloof style joinery from leg to seat, finger and spline joinery on the arm rest, legs tenon and mortised into the armrest. Off-cuts from leg shaping are used in brick stack lamination for the crest rail. Shaped using bandsaw, shaving horse and drawknife, spokeshave, Arbortech, block planes, rasps and files. Finished with Danish oil. Photos: Vincent Casey
