Simon Del Buono, Minibar (Student Awards 2018)

For my year 12 major work, I used New Guinea rosewood to construct a Minibar with dual-swinging doors. The unit will assist in enclosing a number of alcoholic beverages along with glasses to consume them in, as well as soft drinks and multiple pieces of kitchenware. The unit consists of six soft-close wine drawers, and one push to open drawer with a hidden compartment. There is enough shelf room to allow for the storage of snacks and also glassware. I have also implemented a fridge in my piece to keep favourite foods and beverages cold. I constructed the piece using New Guinea rosewood and also used hoop pine in order to create the drawer frames. Mirrors have been used in the doors in order to attract natural light to the glassware and overall give it a modern feel. A variety of timber joinery techniques have been applied in the construction of the unit such as dovetails, stopped housing, dowel, mitre, biscuit, rebate, and butt joints. I have chosen to apply a clear polyurethane varnish to the finished product to bring out the timbers natural grain pattern and colour. Year 12, St Patricks College, Strathfield, NSW.
