Emily Kelly, Mid Century Modern Cabinet (Student Awards 2018)

Over the last 5 years, I have been doing design and technology studies at Trinity College. In year 12 I decided to partake in furniture design. A lot of thought and effort was put into not only the construction of the cabinet but also into the design and structure. There were many different designs that were created but this was the final as it was the one that stood out to me the most. In particular inspiration came from The Jetsons, a television cartoon popular in the 1960s, for a design that would represent the glamour of that 'Jet-Age' era. I constructed my cabinet from hoop pine and jarrah, the inspiration for my cabinet came from the idea of hanging lights. The beam is used to support the three rectangular boxes that are connected with dowel. The main feature of the cabinet would be the laser cut panel that can be seen on the front of the chest, having a bright colour as the backing was a good way to draw attention to this area of the cabinet. The legs are also an important part of the overall cabinet, each leg is made from a solid piece of jarrah that has been cut and tapered to give the legs a good finish and the support that is needed to hold the weight of the cabinet.
