Darius Sachinwalla, Mahogany Trumpet with Case (Student Awards 2018)

The brief we were given by my teacher was simply “make something with wood”. My personal brief was to make something “no student has made before”. From this I decided to make a functional trumpet. It was a unique idea that would test my current skills and teach me new ones. After deciding to make the trumpet I chose to design and build a case for it. This would store it safely and also be an additional feature to showcase my skills The project was started on October 24th 2017 and completed on August 14th 2018. The timbers used in this project were Gaboon ebony, jarrah, Fijian mahogany, wormy chestnut, Huon pine, redgum and Australian red cedar. Other materials used were FormFutura Easy Wood 3D printing filament, brass and Barnes Clarity epoxy resin. As this was my HSC major work I used a wide variety of processes and techniques. The processes included woodturning, biscuit and domino joints and routing as well as other hand skills. I also tried to use more modern techniques such as laser cutting and etching as well as 3D printing wood. The end result was very pleasing and definitely met my self determined brief of being unique.
