Caleb Adams, Live Edge Hall Table & Mirror (Student Awards 2019)

I designed and built an entrance table and mirror for my major work in 2019 (29/4 – 14/8). It was to be a strong, modern and attractive statement in my entrance way. The overall design style was to incorporate and do justice to the inherent beauty of trees, rather than just the plank, giving my project natural contours, shapes, edges and grain. This was achieved through my choice of timber and use of the live edge. I chose to use camphor laurel and Tasmania oak. Camphor laurel is renowned for its beautiful colour and amazing grain patterns. I wanted to showcase this timber in my table and mirror. Tasmanian oak provided strength to the piece and was a neutral timber which complemented the camphor laurel. To showcase my skill in design and woodwork, I chose to design my own custom joint. It was a tapered, abnormal mitred mortise and tenon joint, used in the top of the leg’s corners. It required the most time and effort. I also used other joints such as dovetails, halving, housing, rebate and widening joints. Other materials used included epoxy, mirror and ply for mirror backing.
