Corey Smith, Entertainment unit (Student Awards 2018)

I intended to create a modern aesthetically, productive entertainment unit for everyday use demonstrating a higher quality in the application of a wide range of skills and techniques to increase the level of aesthetics and productivity. As there are so many different types of entertainment units in today's society it was important for me to choose a design that I thought would be outstanding, but could show off many different skills associated within my project. My goal was to create a aesthetically pleasing and productive entertainment unit and I believe that I have done so with the desired skills used throughout my project. The hardest process for me was definitely the creation of the carcase and all the elements that came together to create it including shelves dividers, drawers, doors and the dovetail joinery connecting the carcase. I tried to fit in as many unique skills as possible in order to meet a wide range of skills including through dovetails to make up the carcase, sliding dovetail dividers and shelves, finger joinery throughout the drawers, chamfer angled doors, mitre bridle legs. My project was a very demanding project but consists of precise joinery and techniques that offered levels of difficulty throughout. My project was intended to be used in an everyday household which would not shy away from attention. I am very happy with the timber that I have used mainly consisting of Tasmanian blackwood and pieces of Tasmanian oak that make up drawers and doors. It gives exceptional textures and grain directions to really give the piece overall aesthetics. I feel that my processes have been consistent throughout my entire project and believe that I have produced a well designed efficient entertainment unit that looks great and is a productive piece for everyday use. I have done this through determination and the feeling of satisfaction to see my final product turn out as well as I hoped it would. Year 12, Freshwater Senior Campus, NSW. Teacher: Ben Percy
