Ben Welsh, Chess Set (Student Awards 2018)

My aim was to design and create a custom made Chess Set, this featured as my year 12 major work at Narrabeen Sports High School. The design and manufacturing of this project was done at school. When designing this project it was desirable to create consistent contrast and highlight of light and dark, throughout. Tasmanian oak and merbau were used apart from the Chess Pieces which were made from recycled radiata pine. The drawer has a purple felt inlay to provide padding for the chess pieces when stored in the drawer. The dimensions of the project is 400 x 400mm width and length with a height of 90mm. The project consists of seven different joints each used more then once. These joints include, mitre, bare faced housing, rebate, rebate dowel, dowel , biscuit and through dado joints, Tung oil was used on the set apart from the Chess Pieces, which have a clear varnish and oak finish. This project took around nine months to complete in class, this included going to the woodwork workshop during every free period, even sometimes during lunch and before and after school.
