William Bayliss, Cable Bay Cabinet (Furniture)

I made this piece during my residency with Michael Fortune at the Centre for Fine Woodworking in Nelson, New Zealand. I wanted the piece to be an exercise in asymmetry and whimsy. Having worked as craftsman for five years, this was my chance to design my own piece and to work full time on it. Prior to this, I’ve only been able to work on personal pieces on weekends and after hours. I incorporated techniques which are new to me including steam and kerf bending. I tried not to lose sight of the composition of the piece. It’s easy to let technique take over a piece at the cost of the aesthetics.
