This year has seen a notable public exploration of and appreciation for mid-20th century Australian designed and made furniture in the form of exhibitions that took place in Sydney and Melbourne. In a continuation of this theme, we can now we can see furniture of this period displayed at Penrith Regional Gallery, Emu Plains, NSW.

With ‘Take a Seat – Australian Modernist Seating’, Canberra curator Meredith Hinchliffe has assembled a collection which explores chairs and seating from this period, specifically 1940–1975. A comprehensive exhibition catalogue that includes essays and biographies lists around 60 items that are currently being shown in conjunction with modernist paintings by Margo Lewers, from the gallery’s own collection.

Designers and designer/makers whose work is featured include Gordon Andrews, Marion Hall Best, T.H. Brown and sons, Fred Ward, Fred Lowen, Neville Gruzman, Gerald Lewers, Karen Ingeborg & Associates, Steven Kalmar, George Korody, Paul Kafka, Parker Furniture, Douglas Snelling, Grant and Mary Featherstone, Derek Wrigley, Van Treight Furniture, Guyla Soos, Clement Meadmore and Michael Hirst.
