Tasmanian-based Nick Randall's range of yacht inspired limited edition furniture has recently been released.

Synthesis is the culmination of four years of research and development by Nick which included building a traditional strip planked rowing dinghy from local timbers.

Using a similar technique the new furniture features wood sections painstakingly fitted together into flowing, curvaceous forms which hint at their inspiration – the classic yacht. The planking subtly accentuates the forms while on some of the works angular support structures produce an interesting interplay between the elements.

'I have a passion for boats and have always admired classic timber yachts with their elegant and graceful lines’, said Nick. ‘As a furniture maker I am also fascinated with how yachts are designed and built and saw the potential of utilising these techniques in my work.

Nick named his collection Synthesis because of the seamless integration of modern digital technology with traditional craftsmanship. After the initial hand sketching of ideas designs were 3D modeled and patterns were CNC cut.

From then on traditional hand craftsmanship was used to build the pieces with each one patiently, planked, hand shaped and finished.

Nick Randall is a graduate of the University of Tasmania School of Art and is an established furniture designer/maker having completed numerous commissions for private and corporate clients. His studio Nick Randall Design is based in Hobart, Tasmania.
