Founded in 1994, SOFA CHICAGO (Sculpture Objects Functional Art + Design) is Chicago’s longest continuously running art fair and the world’s foremost fair dedicated to masterworks of contemporary art and design in all media including glass, ceramics, wood, fibre and metal. During the past two decades, SOFA CHICAGO has grown to attract more than 30,000 visitors every year and exhibitors from the US and around the world, including Australia.

SOFA CHICAGO 2014 returns to Navy Pier’s Festival Hall November 7–9, with an opening night preview Thursday, November 6.

Some of the world’s finest galleries, will feature works by emerging and established artists and designers in glass, ceramics, textiles, wood, and metal. In all, more than 70 galleries will be featured, including our own Beaver Galleries, Australia.

Highlights include a lecture series, Connect (design competition and exhibition) and Special Exhibits.

The latter features museum-style presentations from prominent curators, directors, and artists; notably including for wood lovers a presentation by the Collectors of Wood Art titled: Beyond Boundaries: Wood Art For The 21st Century.

Collectors of Wood Art, a non-profit organization comprised of collectors, artists, museums, galleries, and enthusiasts, presents a juried and unique presentation of contemporary art and design by 25 artists currently working with wood. Curated by Zilber, the Ronald C. and Anita L. Wornick Curator of Contemporary Decorative Arts, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, this exhibition explores how artists working across the spectrum of contemporary wood art today are travelling in distinctly different directions, and what that might signify for the future of this diverse community. Turned and carved wood, sculpture, furniture, design objects, as well as works that blur those distinctions are included.

Presented artists include: Michael Bauermeister, Derek Bencomo, John Beaver, Beston Barnett, Jerome Blanc, Michael Brolly, Andy DiPietro, Tom Eckert, David Ellsworth, Katie Hudnall, David Knopp, Bud Latven, Tally Locke, Alain Mailland, Malcolm Martin and Gaynor Dowling, Wendy Maruyama, Bart Niswonger, Pascal Oudet, Gord Peteran, Hilary Pfeifer, Binh Pho, Norm Sartorius, Michael Scarborough, Michaela Stone, and Kimberly Winkle.
