Material Objects
Nishi Gallery
June 3 – June 26, 2016

Material Objects is a combined furniture exhibition from Elliot Bastianon and Andrew Carvolth that encompasses a broad cross-section of the craft and design experience.

Elliot Bastianon’s work is a speculation of material possibilities and adventures that draws inspiration from folded structures. Carvolth has developed a contemporary Australian vernacular through a series of thoughtful objects that celebrates regional materials and processes.

A $15,000 Project Funding Grant from the Australia Council was an affirmation of concept and also covered the cost of materials and renting gallery space.

Elliot Bastianon has combined sheets of acoustic panel and timber to create furniture. EchoPanel is a material that Elliot  experimented with during his honours year at university. Made from non-woven PET it's a lightweight and recyclable material with strength and sound absorbing qualities.

Folded, bent, creased, pressed and pleated into existence, Elliot’s pieces are an investigation into the possibilities of structure and form. His collection of objects have been discovered rather than premeditated, and in doing so presents a range of furniture with unorthodox forms and unfamiliar characteristics.

Andrew Carvolth presents a restrained collection of objects, but each with an undercurrent of complexity. Splicing traditional craft processes with contemporary materials and manufacturing methods, he has created a body of work that has filtered through non-commercially available timber species, hinting at the unique qualities of materials that exist in regional areas.

The exhibition is broad in its goals and ambitious in nature. It will be an informative experience, demonstrating the breadth and calibre of Australian design and remind viewers of the boundless potential and creative thinking that exists in Australia; acting as a tool to encourage a deeper understanding of craft and design.
