Magazine rack
Hoop pine ply (1 sheet 2400 x 1200 x 2mm)
Joinery
The rack is made in two matching sections
which are butt joined. The two sections
are made by steam bending four layers
of plywood and then laminating them together
over a form which was made out of water
resistant chipboard.
Glue
For the butt join PVA was used and for
the laminating, urea formaldehyde.
Finish
The magazine rack has been finished with
a Gilly Stephensons Cabinet Makers Wax
( a blend of carnauba and beeswax). The
wax was applied with 0000 steel wool and
then buffed with some cloth.
Concept
This piece was designed and made during
the winter of 2007 for my first solo piece
as a first year furniture design student
at RMIT, Melbourne. The project was to
make a small homeware item that contained
a curve, therefore requiring the bending
of timber.
My ideas generated from the fact that
I wanted to redesign an existing product
in a new fresh way. I also wanted the
design to not contain a complicated curve
as I would have limited time to make the
item.
