Mike Lynn, WA

I made my mirror from sheoak and commenced by dressing the timber to 120 x 30mm. After this two rebates at the back, one for the glass and one for the back, were machined on the tablesaw.
Next stage was to cut the mitre joints for the corners. These were reinforced by 6mm cross grained splines. I used epoxy resin for the glue-up.
When all was set, the shape was marked out and cut with a jigsaw. This was then finished with a compass plane and spokeshaves. All edges were rounded over with a 10mm radius router bit.
The shelf was made from 150 x 20mm timber, shaped at the front to complement the shape of the mirror. The same router bit was used to round over the edges.
The little brackets were cut on a bandsaw and shaped with spokeshaves.
The finish is three coats of acrylic lacquer and rubbed down with wire wool and wax polish.
This has been a straightforward project and would possibly suit a limited production run, in which case a jig and a spindle moulder would replace the jigsaw for cutting out.
