Stefan Hoelldobler, Victoria Park, WA

The concept behind this coffee table is efficiency and recycling.
Every day hundreds of metres of offcuts are accumulated and discarded. This particular design focuses on offcuts produced by the Venetian blind manufacturing industry which can’t be used for blinds as they are either too small or damaged. The fact that the offcuts are 3mm thick wood slats make them very difficult to recycle for other purposes, so until now they’ve just been thrown away.
Joinery, gluing and finishing
Table433 reuses these 3mm wood and PVC slats in a visually stunning manner. Every blade is hand selected and laminated, 433 to be exact, using urethane glue, to reveal a table that doesn’t look like any other offcut table.
After gluing, two tabletop halves are joined together using plywood biscuits that stretch over the entire length of the table. Finally, the table surface is sanded, oiled (using three coats of Livos oil) and lifted off the ground by brushed stainless steel legs. The legs are recessed into slots which are routed into the laminate with a tight fitting tolerance and secured using Epoxy glue.
Table433 is a simple, yet stunning way of improving the efficiency of material usage. By joining and offsetting the two table halves by about one blade width, a jagged line stretches over the length of the surface. This line
Is another visual feature which lays emphasis on the colour variations of the laminate.
Table433 will have a production run of 20 pieces.
