Adam Cruikshank, North Perth, WA

Concept
Chrysalis pendant lights explore the capabilities of timber veneer, in a way that captures the natural beauty of the material whilst utilising its superior structural properties. During set-up, the inherent tensions in timber cause the shades to take on their own unique shape, producing beautiful, bio-forms.
The concept was inspired by the native cycads of Perth, whose leaves can be found spiraling and overlapping, creating neat effects in the sunlight. The design process was very much hands on, a matter of getting to know the materials and pushing its capabilities. Prototyping involved a progression from card models, to 1.5mm ply, leading to the development of a unique process of veneer reinforced lamination.
