Hand plane

‘This plane belonged to my father who purchased it new from a hardware store in Puckle Street, Moonee Ponds in 1951 for the princely sum of 12 guineas. At the time his weekly pay was only 12 pounds and for those that don’t know the connection there were 20 shillings to the pound and 21 shillings to the guinea.

‘At the time my father, after emigrating from Europe, was building his home where he still resides today. The plane is made from oak (I think) and was in a dilapidated state and had to cut in half, dressed square with an insert installed to accept the blade and wedge. Panels were added to the sides to keep the whole thing together.’
