‘The idea
of reMADE provoked an old challenge –
can I carve wood in the traditional designs
of those great crafters from past centuries.
Stepping outside familiar territory was
current as I had just crossed the Nullabor
to relocate from WA. I use the boat as
a personal metaphor for change and movement.
Participating in reMADE and the idea of
‘traditional’ gave me the
freedom to explore, embellish and be lavish
with pattern in its elaborate forms. It
was a pleasure. My next challenge is to
make another boat using Australian flora
and fauna in our own style and tradition
of woodcarving.’ |
